Reading English Stories with Kids: A Bedtime Routine

By Dobi Apps · ← All guides

Bedtime is one of the easiest times to add English to a child’s day. It is calm and it happens every night, and children like hearing the same stories again and again. Repetition is exactly what language learning needs.

Why it works

Children who are read to every day hear far more words by the time they start school. The research, and how to use it at bedtime, is covered in How to Build a Bedtime Story Routine That Teaches English.

A simple 15-minute routine

  1. Pick together (2 min). Let your child choose from two or three short stories. Having a choice keeps them interested.
  2. Listen first (5 min). Play the audiobook version so your child hears natural pronunciation, and follow the pictures together.
  3. Talk about it (5 min). Ask open questions: “What happened?” “What do you think comes next?” This is called dialogic reading.
  4. Repeat a favorite (3 min). Reread a page they love. Rereading builds fluency (evidence).
