A 30-Day English Listening and Reading Plan
By Dobi Apps · ← All guides
Thirty days won’t make you fluent, but it is enough time to build a habit. Research on habit formation suggests a new routine takes around 66 days on average to feel automatic (How to Build an English Learning Habit That Lasts), so treat this plan as the first half of that journey.
Daily time: 20–30 minutes. Tools: Audiobook for listening and Storybook for reading.
Week 1: Find your level and set the routine
- Day 1: Find your CEFR level (guide).
- Days 2–7: Listen to one short audiobook chapter a day at your level, reading the transcript as you listen.
- Pick a fixed time, such as after breakfast or on your commute, and stick to it.
Week 2: Read more
- Read one easy story a day in Storybook. It should feel almost effortless. (Why easy reading works)
- Save up to 5 new words a day, no more.
- Review the words you saved in week 1.
Week 3: Repeat and shadow
- Reread or relisten to a favorite story from week 1 or 2 (Does Rereading a Book Build English Fluency?).
- Shadow one paragraph a day: play it, pause, and repeat it aloud (Shadowing guide).
Week 4: Level up
- Try one book a level higher. If you understand less than 98% of the words, go back down.
- Mix formats: a comic or graphic novel can be a nice break (Comics and graphic novels for learning English).
- Day 30: Compare your listening and reading stats with day 1.
If you fall behind
Missing a day is normal. Motivation drops when practice feels like a chore you didn’t choose, so let yourself pick the books you enjoy. See Why English Learners Lose Motivation and Quit.
